Activity Analysis Charts

The "Charts" button on the main screen toolbar gives access to a flexible tool for the analysis of activity data. The activity data is taken from the currently selected work group. If more than one group is selected (use the left side data selector column and Ctrl+Click for multiple individual groups or Shift+Click for ranges) then all the work episodes in the selected groups will be analysed.

NB. The sample charts below contain a small amount of test data to illustrate the layout and are not "real world" examples.

When first displayed, the screen shows a chart of work and rest by hour for all the work episodes.

This gives information on the split of work and rest by hour of the day. For example:

Between 0:00 and 0:59 all recorded episodes were work

Between 1:00 and 1:59 all recorded episodes were work

Between 2:00 and 2:59 half the time was recorded as rest and half as work

Between 3:00 and 3:59 all the recoded episodes were rest

Etc.

The pull down list "Type of Chart" contains all the available types of chart and will depend on the activity categories defined for the group. For each category there are three charts (the timing of work is used as an example):

% Time by Hour. This is similar to the work/rest chart and show activity by hour of the day expressed as a percentage.

Total Time by Hour. Similar to the chart above but expressed as total time rather than as a percentage.

Overall Pie Chart. The division of time by activity over all recorded work episodes.

There is also a bar chart showing the level of inappropriate duties in percentage terms by hour.

To display a chart, select from the pull down list and click the "Draw Chart" button.

Chart Settings

The "Change Chart Settings" button allows some simple changes to the chart layout.

·      Start hour. This set the first hour to be displayed on bar charts

·      Use of colour in charts. The bars can use block colours, shaded colours or black and white shading

Select the required options and click "Save"

The colours used in the bars and pie sections are the same colours defined to identify duty codes. These can be changed on the main DRS configuration screen (on the "Supervisor" menu). See the DRS System Configuration Screen for more details.

Day Filter

By default, all the data for the selected group (or groups) is analysed. The day filter pull down list allows some restrictions.

·      Weekdays only

·      Weekends only

·      Mondays only

·      Tuesdays only

·      Wednesdays only

·      Thursdays only

·      Fridays only

·      Saturdays only

·      Sundays only

Select the option and click "Draw Chart" to see the result. The selected day filter will remain in place until it is changed.

Chart Headings

The headings on the chart are derived from the details of the group and the activity category. It may be desirable to change these, and is probably essential if more than one group is being analysed.

The top two lines can be altered and will not be changed by DRS while this screen is displayed. The third line will be changed if a new chart type is selected and the "Draw Chart" button used.

Printing Charts

A "Print" button is provided that will print a copy of the chart on a landscape A4 sheet of paper. More control over layout can be obtained by using a word processor package (such as Word) and pasting a copy of the chart into it.

·      Display the chart required

·      Click the "To Clipboard" button

·      Switch to the word processor on the PC

·      Right click and select "paste" (or use the keyboard Crtl+V)

·      Move and size the image as required.

A bit map file of the chart can be produced and saved using the "Save Chart" button.

More Detailed Analysis

If more detail is required, or the charts supplied are not suitable, a CSV file can be produced for import into a spreadsheet such as Excel.

Click the "Raw Data to CSV" button. You will be asked to specify location and a file name.

There is a line in the file for each work episode recorded:

·      Work group name

·      Doctor name

·      Date

·      Start time

·      End time

·      Category 1 activity

·      Category 2 activity

·      Etc.

Advanced Chart Style Changes

To gain access to the advanced chart properties screen, move the mouse pointer onto the chart area and right click.

Every aspect of the chart can be changed. Full details of this facility are beyond the scope of this help file but some pointers on ways to make the chart more attractive can be given. No harm can be done by experimenting. If the charts screen is closed and then re-opened, the default settings will always be re-applied. Custom setting have to be specifically saved and applied to take effect.

·      Change the background colour for the chart. Select the "ChartArea" tab, then the "Interior" tab and change the background colour.

·      Put a box round the chart. Select the "ChartArea" tab, then the "Border" tab and select the type and width required

·      Change the background for the headings, legend and border. Select the "Control" tab, then the "Interior" tab and change the background colour.

·      Put a box round the whole area. Select the "Control" tab, then the "General" tab and check "IsBoxed"

·      Change the type of chart. Select the "ChartGroups" tab, then the "General" tab. Select the type of chart from the pull down list. Warning – the data may not produce useful results with many of the chart types.

The settings can be saved using the "Save Style" button (a file with extension oc2 will be saved). Previous setting can be loaded using the "Load Styles" button.
