Diary Cards

Diary Card Analysis - Getting Started

This system is designed to assist with the analysis of data on junior doctors' working practices collected on diary cards filled in by the doctors. The actual hours of work and rest are evaluated against the targets set out in the "New Deal for Junior Doctors" and the European Working Time Directive. General information on the design and planning of diary card studies is given under  Introduction to Diary Cards Studies and Guidelines for the Successful use of Diary Cards

Entry of a group of diary cards follows these steps :-

1.  The work group for which diary cards are being collected must be defined. Use the “New Work Group Wizard” to do this. If the work group already exists, select it from the list on the main screen and click on the "Grp info" toolbar button. Check that the doctors involved in the study are listed and the study start date is correct. If not, put in the correct values, see The Group Information Input Screen for more information.

2.  If you want DRS to print blank data collection forms, on the "Prints" menu, select "Print blank diary cards". See Printing Blank Diary Cards for more details.

3.  The doctors fill in the diary cards.

4.  On the main screen make sure the required work group is selected and click on the "Diary Cards" toolbar button. This screen shows any diary cards already entered and allows input and changes. See The Diary Card Input Screen for more details.

5.  Use the "Analysis" toolbar button on either the main screen or the diary cards input screen to analyses the data input. See The Analysis Report for more details. A number of elements are available but the most important is probably "Group analsysis of diary cards". This gives the average duty and work hours for the group and checks New Deal compliance. The "List and analyse diary cards by doctor" will be usefull for more detailed examination of the results. It shows each diary card by doctor and highlights areas not New Deal compliant.
