The day after an on call day must be treated in a different way to a normal not on call day. For an on-call rota, the “New Deal” defines rest entitlement for an on call day in a 32 hour period. Hence, the rest in the day after a day on call must be included in any analysis. For other work patterns - full shift, partial shift and 24 hour partial shift, the post on call day is not required.
The day may have more than one duty period. The period between may or may not be paid.
Care must be taken to enter late starts and early finishes correctly. The official start and end duty times are always entered. If, for example the doctor finishes work early at 3:00pm when paid to 5:00pm, this should be entered as a duty end time of 5:00pm (17:00) and two hours added to the rest. Similarly, if the doctor starts work at 11:00, but was paid from 9:00, two hours must be added to the rest element of the duty period.
First Duty Period - Start
The time the first duty period of the day started. NB 24 hour clock is used.
First Duty Period - End
The time the first duty period ended. NB 24 hour clock is used..
First Duty Period - Rest
The total rest in the first duty period (expressed as hrs:mins). See A Definition of Rest for details of what “rest” is in terms of the “New Deal”.
A second duty period for the day must be defined if it starts on the same day as the first duty period. If it starts after midnight, it should be defined on the next day.
Second Duty Period - Start
The time the second duty period of the day started. NB 24 hour clock is used.
Second Duty Period - End
The time the second duty period ended. NB 24 hour clock is used.
Second Duty Period - Rest
The total rest in the second duty period (expressed as hrs:mins). See A Definition of Rest for details of what “rest” is in terms of the “New Deal”. If this duty period starts before 16:00, the rest defined will be added into the total rest for the previous on call day.
Period between is paid?
Click on the small box to put a tick in it if the gap between the two duty periods is paid. In this case, any portion of the gap that is before 17:00 will be added to the total rest for the on call day. A second click will remove the tick. If the gap is not paid, the interval will be compared to the “New Deal” standards for the minimum gap between duty periods, and highlighted on the analysis screen if it is too short.
Natural Breaks
HSC 1998/240 specifies that 30 minutes of continuous break after approximately 4 hours continuous duty, should be achieved during the normal working day. If there are concerns that this is not being achieved, then a detailed diary study of normal days should be undertaken. Recording natural breaks in detail should clarify the matter. They are not part of the rest calculation.
Total Rest for this day and the on call day
This field is not entered. It is a summation of all the rest detailed on the screen and from the related on call day. As changes are made to the hours, the total rest will be updated. For on call rotas, the day following a night on call (post on call day) must be included as well as any day time rest during the on call period. A total of 8 hours rest is required in the 32 hour period. Failure to meet the targets will be highlighted in red on the analysis screen.
