Other Health Professionals

Nurses and midwives already share a wide range of clinical work with doctors. Tasks which are often performed by junior doctors, and could be better performed by other staff, should be identified and reviewed. These may include:

·      intravenous injections

·      cannulation

·      suturing

·      ECGs

·      catheterisation

·      confirmation of expected deaths

·      prescribing of some drugs

·      defibrillation

GOOD PRACTICE

The following can contribute significantly to achieving the New Deal:

·      Daily dedicated daytime emergency lists (CEPOD lists)

·      Daily dedicated daytime trauma lists

·      Post-Take Ward rounds

·      Fixed on take days

·      Freedom from fixed commitments when on take days

·      Admission and/or Assessment Wards

·      Pre-operative assessments clinics
