When the set of duty codes have been defined, the mouse or keyboard can be used to place duties in the work pattern.
Placing duties by keyboard.
Use the cursor keys to move to the required day and week in the work pattern. Press the key representing the code of the duty to be worked on that day. The hours of the duty will be placed in that day, and the cell will be given an appropriate colour.
The computer will take no action if the key press does not represent a duty or if the duty is not appropriate for the day selected (for example, a standard day is selected for a weekend).
To remove a duty, moved to the day and press the Delete key. For a weekday, this will result in a standard day being selected for that day or, if a weekend a blank day.
Placing duties by drag and drop.
Use the mouse pointer to select the required duty in the duties table on the right of the screen. Hold down the left mouse button and move the pointer over the day where the duty is to be placed. Release the left mouse button. The duty code should now appear in the day selected. Repeat this process as required.
A similar drag and drop process can also be used to move the duties around in the work pattern. Click on the duty to be moved, and holding down the left-hand mouse button move the pointer to the new location for the duty. Then released the left mouse button. The selected duty code will now appeared in the new location and the previous location will revert to either a standard day or a weekend day.
If you wish to copy a duty rather than moving it, hold down either the shift or control keys while performing the drag and drop operation.
To remove a duty completely, drag and drop it away from the work pattern grid.
Placing duties using "click on".
In the toolbar at the top of the screen, there is a button labelled "click on". This enables the mouse to be used to place duties in the work pattern with a single left click.
When the button is clicked, its caption will change to "click off", and the mouse cursor will change to a cross hair. Use the mouse to select the duty to be placed in the work pattern from the right hand duty codes table. Click on the days in the work pattern where the duty code is to be placed.
By default, a click will place one duty on the day selected. This can be changed by altering the settings for "Rpt (wks)" and "No. days" (on the toolbar next to the "Click on" button). The "Rpt (wks)" setting controls the weekly repeat rate for the duty. For example, if the doctor works a certain duty on every Monday. Set the repeat factor to one and place the duty on the Monday of week one. The computer will automatically place repeats of this duty for every Monday throughout the work pattern.
The "No. days" is set to one initially but can be increased. When set to three for example, a click on Monday of week one will also place the same duty on Tuesday and Wednesday of week one.
The repeat factors are useful for entering complex work patterns where, for example, the doctor may work a one-in-five pattern for weekdays but a one-in-seven pattern for weekends. This would require a work pattern cycle length of 35 weeks to express the full pattern. To enter the weekday duties the repeat factor would be set to five and the duties placed in the first five weeks. The rest of the pattern would be filled by the repeat factor. The repeat factor would then be increased to seven and the weekend duties placed.
When click entry has been completed, click on the "click off" button to turn the function off. The mouse pointer will revert to its normal form.
