This is the main report produced by the system. It is made up of a number of elements which can be selected as required. The button labeled "Elements" in the toolbar allows the user to select which sections of the report are to be produced. Make sure the elements required are ticked and click the "Redo Report" button.
For details on how to view the report on the screen, and options for publishing the report, see Using the Print Preview Screen
Details of the report elements are given below. There are two main sections - work pattern analysis and diary cards analysis.
Work Pattern Analysis
Banding Calculations
The work pattern is analysed and the band calculated using the flow chart from the junior doctor's contract. Details are shown of the path followed through banding flow chart and the calculated numbers used at decision points.
For more details see Banding Calculations
New Deal Analysis.
The work pattern is analysed and the results shown compared to the New Deal targets. Most of the items in the table are self explanatory. For the purpose of analysing long breaks, the longest duty period and the shortest off duty period, the final day of the analysis period is assumed to loop back to the first day of the analysis period.
For more details see New Deal Analysis Calculations
An option is available to show details of the prospective cover calculations.
EWTD Analysis.
The analysis just looks at the theoretical work pattern. No account is taken of excess rest periods which can be used to compensate for breaches of the working-time directives.
For more details see EWTD Analysis Calculations
Print the work pattern as a grid.
The work pattern is printed in a form similar to the work pattern input grid. It can be printed with duty codes, names and times or just with at the start and end times of duties.
It is also possible to select not to print the grid in colour. This may be useful with some printers where a coloured background makes the text hard to read.
Print shifts and normal days used in the work pattern.
Two tables are printed. One for the duty codes defined for use in the work pattern and one for the normal working week.
If diary cards have been entered for the work group, and duty codes have been used to link diary cards to the work pattern, then the average actual start and end times for the duty will also be shown.
If any diary cards have been identified as standard days, then that the average actual hours will be shown alongside the normal working week defined for the pattern.
Print Comments
Any comments linked to the group will be printed.
Cover provided by the work pattern.
This table shows how many doctors are working for each hour during the week. The numbers represent the minimum number of doctors on duty during the hour.
The coloured bars show a doctor's duty. They are rounded up to at the nearest hour, so if a duty extends only 15 minutes past the hour, the bar will still cover the whole hour.
Diary card analysis
Group analysis of the diary cards
The available diary cards are analysed against the New Deal and the European working time directive. A full analysis is not possible due to the limited time period usually used for diary card studies. It is not possible to track items such as compensatory rest and long breaks.
Average hours of duty and work will only be calculated if DRS has an entry for every possible diary card in the study. This is because large errors can occur if the system attempts to guess the duty for just a single missing diary card. See Diary Cards - Average Duty/Work Calculation for details of the calculation. The user should ensure that a reasonable estimate is entered for every doctor and every day in the study period even if no card was completed by the doctor.
There is an option to add details of banding calculation based on the figures obtained from the diary card study.
List and analyse diary Cards by Doctor.
A full list of all diary cards for all doctors in the study is provided. A box can be checked to stop doctors names being printed.
Activity Analysis Tables.
If activity data has been collected for the group, tables of results by category will be shown. See Introduction to Activity Analysis for more details.
New Deal analysis (diary cards and work pattern combined).
This analysis is almost identical to the New Deal analysis for the work pattern. However, start and end times for the standard working week duties and the start and end times for out of hours duties in the work pattern are replaced by average values obtained from the diary card study. For this to be useful, it is important to identify duty codes on as many diary cards as possible.
This analysis probably gives more accurate estimates of work hours and intensity than analysis of work pattern or diary cards alone. The theoretical work pattern can be inaccurate because doctors often start work earlier than the official start times and end later than the official end times of duties. Also, expected amounts of rest may not be achieved. Diary card studies can be inaccurate duty to missing diary cards, leave, and use of a locums. By combining the two elements, some of these errors will be eliminated.
EWTD analysis (diary cards and work pattern combined).
This analysis is almost identical to the EWTD analysis for the work pattern. As with the combined work pattern and diary card analysis for New Deal targets, this can give a more accurate analysis than the work pattern alone or diary cards alone.
